An intersting show coming up in May that looks like it will be worth the trip to Jersey. Curator Olympia Lambert has gained access to a large mill space that is going to be taken over for the month by a huge line-up of artists. Checkout the website, the pictures of the space are really impressive. They are also hosting a fundraiser for the nest few days, you can donate here:

Shawn Gilheeney

Painter and printer Shawn Gilheeney has been with Elwa for some time now and we thought it appropriate to give you a glimpse of some of his latest prints. Most of his work is based on the urban environment. Adding and subtracting elements from the decaying buildings of a lost industrial past, Gilheeney's prints bring new energy to these forgotten spaces.

We are proud to announce that Gilheeney will also be the next release for Elwa coming up at the end of the month, so stay tuned...

Word on the Street

Some old friends of ours are participating in the Olympics this year! Not as athletes, but even better, the Big Nazo puppet troupe is in Vancouver adding to the festivities on a daily basis with their strange blend of costumes, puppets, and music. Elwa has always been a big fan of these guys and the artistic director Erminio Pinque works tirelessly to bring great humor and art to our streets.

Hyperallergic has prepared $ECRET$ OF THE NEW YORK ART WORLD, which invites visitors to reveal who in the city's art industry owes them money. Will the pyramid scheme that is the art world collapse when the secrets come out? Hyperallergic hopes so.

Magda Sawon of Postmasters Gallery will host "Ask the Art Dealer," vowing to truthfully answer any and every question posed to her. We're starting to collect questions now, if you post one in the comments here it will get asked!

Sarah Smizz will give away free posters featuring her "Maps of the Art System."

BYOA - X-Initiative

If you missed it, this past Wednesday the space called the X-Initiative had a final curtain call with a 24 hour art party. Artists were encouraged to bring artwork and have the run of the 3 floors. It was a fun event with a great energy and countless artists displaying their works.

Elwa was happy to participate and brought over a couple of prints from Shawn Gilheeney and Devin Powers. As we don't have a permanent space, we enjoy opportunities to participate in events like this to get our artists and editions out and about.

The X-Iniative was a great project and it will be missed. Over the year of existence they had some of the most engaging programming in the city.

Artist Update

We are proud to relay that Chris has recently been the recipient of a number of grants and is also presently showing at various locations throughout Europe.

He has received the Estrid Ericson grant for the years 2009 and 2010 and also the Konstnarsnämnden one year working grant for 2009.

In addition he is presently showcased in four shows throughout the next six months:

"Spring Salon" Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden
"un-natural Selection" at Nääs Konshantverk, Floda Sweden
"Idiotheim" at Kaolin Galleri, Stockholm, Sweden

We are pleased to announce that Chris is officially part of the Swedish National Museum collection. The piece "Bacchanalia" was acquired by the museum in 2009. The picture below is a detail of the work:

Note to the viewer:

This silkscreen is one of an edition of 30. The image comes from a drawing made using a straightedge and a paint pen on black printmaking paper. The title of the drawing and subsequent prints, “Things keep their secrets,” is taken from Heraclitus’ Fragments. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Aymar is an artist that Elwa has worked with many times in the past. We are happy to be a sponsor and supporter of this show. After a couple long years with his family in Peru, Aymar has returned with work that will certainly be exciting. While in Peru, Aymar has intensely studied and practiced the indigenous weaving traditions of various South American cultures.

In this new body of work, Aymar is combing the past and present, using found trash and plastic to create intricately woven pieces. Along with these will be a new series of paintings.

ABCyz Opening Pics and Comments

We are happy to report that the ABCyz opening was a great success. A tremendous turnout, all kinds of art, a couple bands, a bunch of performances, and a boat of beer. There was a wide range of work displayed, making it a great survey of new endeavors taking place throughout NYC.

There were about 40 collectives/groups involved in the show so it is hard to give a quick rundown of all the undertakings, but some highlights include: a group piece from the Eyelevel BQE team, a "day in the life" large scale drawing from the said group, a fantastic miniature collage from Norte Maar, and of course our newest artist Carl Eckoff.

The show is open until Nov. 7th, and it is worth the trip. A genuine art space with great rooftop views right in the heart of Manhattan.

Elwa is pleased to announce our participation in a group show of group shows this weekend. Hosted by Silvershed, the exhibition will showcase new art collectives, curatorial projects, and other initiatives founded in NYC in the last five years.

Elwa will be displaying the new work of Carl Eckhoff, a series of antique postcards that have been refurbished and painted with abstract shapes and pop colors. Please check out the featured works section of our website to see the new paintings: featured works.

ABCyz is a collaboratively curated show of art collectives.

On October 23, 2009, ABCyz opens an exhibition of NYC-based critical contemporary art collectives, curatorial groups and art publishers formed over the past five years.

ABC is shorthand for the participating types of groups: A — artist-run spaces and projects, B — new curatorial initiatives and not-for-profit art groups and C — open forum for other types of art collectives.
